DCC Honorable
Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, HE Ambassador
of Japan Inoue, and Ms. Kayashima, JICA
Resident Representative inaugurated the
country's first ever sanitary landfill site
at Matuail on 3rd October 2007. The project,
developed with the technical support of
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA),
aims at capacity development of DCC to
improve the solid waste management services.
The speakers hoped that after its
completion, the whole landfill project will
become the highest beautiful green peak
around Dhaka and would offer an attractive
view to the city dwellers. Japanese
Ambassador Masayuki Inoue, Resident
Representative of JICA Bangladesh Nobuko
Suzuki Kayashima and Prof AMM Shafiullah,
vice chancellor of Bangladesh University
Engineering and Technology (BUET), were
present at the ceremony as special guests.
Mayor Khoka said that this site is one of
the major achievements of DCC. He also
requested for proper utilisation and
maintenance of the site. Ms. Kayashima said
the project is constructing an
environment-friendly landfill site that is a
milestone in this arena. She also mentioned
that DCC and JICA are working together for a
common goal of realising proper solid waste
management in Dhaka city. Without efficient
operation and monitoring of the surrounding
environment, all the efforts of establishing
this landfill will be fruitless, she added.
BUET VC AMM Shafiullah appreciated the
modern technologies introduced in the site.
He said this kind of landfill sites would
take the waste management system to a
greater height. Japanese Ambassador Masayuki
Inoue said all the metropolitan cities of
the world are having Solid Waste Management
problem. The operation of the landfill site
shall be carried out in a systematic manner
whereby wastes are disposed of in layers,
compacted and covered by a layer of matured
wastes at the end of each day’s operation,
said the project director, Dr. Tariq Bin
Yousuf, who made a presentation on the
project during the programme. The working
roads are being constructed on the waste
using construction debris to facilitate
movement of waste transporting trucks to go
up and dispose waste debris up to 20 meters
height, he added. Major sanitary landfill
components introduced under the project were
leachate collection and gas venting system,
surface drainage improvement, systematic
operation of waste by daily coverage, slope
reformation, working roads, weighbridge
operation and vehicle washing facilities,
Dr. Tariq explained. |
